A belated happy new year, everyone. Catching up with the news, here are a few things from the last weeks, in no particular order.
At the end of last year news broke that the Korean sci-fi film that Richard worked on a couple of years ago, has been taken on by Netflix. It is due to launch February 6th. In this newest trailer, Richard can’t be seen – but heard. Listen closely to the trailer intro.

Good news: Uncle Vanya is being broadcast on BBC tonight. It will be made available for 2021 via the BBC Player afterwards. Note: Only accessible in the UK.
As the year comes to an end, here is a true blast from the past. Brit actor Tamsin Greig has posted a Diet Coke ad on her Instagram – and her scene partner there is a very young Richard Armitage. Check it out below:

Also today: Theatre photographer Graham Michael has posted a compilation of images from Uncle Vanya that had been printed as a souvenir piece for the cast and crew of the play.

A piece of news on RAnet’s own behalf – please read! Continuing the regular donations originally instigated by RAnet’s previous webmistress, Ali, I have made a donation of £233 to LOROS via the much-loved memorial site for Mrs Margaret Armitage.
FYI: These donations are created from the Amazon referral fees received by RAnet. The scheme continues to run, i.e. even after the changeover from Ali to Sonja, RAnet is still an Amazon Associate and receives a referral fee every time a shopper accesses Amazon’s US, UK and DE sites via our specific links and buys an item. In the past Ali was able to donate between £300 and £500 every quarter, all thanks to Richard Armitage fans who conducted their Amazon shopping through our links.
Our appeal to you: Please consider using the RAnet Amazon links for your shopping on Amazon.com, Amazon.co.uk and Amazon.de. All you need to do is access the respective Amazon site via our links. You are not charged any extra costs; using the referral link is completely free of charge for you. Clicking on our links and buying an item during the same session, simply incurs referral fees for RAnet. The 3 different links can be found on RAnet’s starting page (scroll down past Sir Guy). However, you can make it easier for yourself to use the links, if you bookmark them in your browser and in the future access the sites with just a couple of clicks that way.
This year, our accrued referral fees are much smaller. There are two reasons for that: In the past, Ali generously donated the entire referral fees to charity. While the donation scheme will continue as originally set up by Ali, we are now deducting the costs of keeping the website running, from the referral fees. We received €398.62 (Euro!!) in referral fees in total. We have had web site related costs of €139.87. Hence we were left with €258.75 for donation. Secondly, fans may have used the referral links less because they were not sure whether the scheme was still running.
But the good news is – it is! And with the holiday season coming up, it would be fantastic if you considered using our Amazon links if you are thinking of making any purchases on their sites.
If you would like to see past contributions by RAnet to charity, please check our Donations section.

Red Production Company has now posted the full, unexpurgated podcast conversation with Richard and Shaun Dooley. The original, edited version was released on 6 March – scroll down to see. But here is the full-length chat, posted by Red on Vimeo:
There have been a few further BBC Radio interviews with Richard on the occasion of Uncle Vanya in the cinema, but unfortunately I have not got the links at hand.
28 October 2020
BIG news: A new project for Richard has been announced. He will return for another Netflix episodic thriller that is part of Harlan Coben’s multi-film deal with the streaming platform. Based on Coben’s novel of the same name, Stay Close will be produced by Red Productions once again and filmed next year in Manchester. Richard will play “Ray, [a] once promising documentary photographer, now stuck in a dead-end job pandering to celebrity obsessed rich kids”. You can read more about it in an article by Deadline.
23 October 2020
More radio with Richard. This morning, he was interviewed on “Midmorning on BBC Radio Cornwall”. Not sure how long this will be available on the website, but here is the link. The chat with Richard starts at 11:44. Some very intriguing hints there about a new Netflix show due to come out next year! And make sure you listen right until the end and hear Richard fumble with his overheating laptop.
22 October 2020
Less than a week to go until Uncle Vanya the film is shown. Richard has been busy talking to radio and press about the filmed play. Yesterday he spoke to BBC Radio Derby. His short chat is currently accessible via BBC Sounds; it starts around the 1:10 mark. Another conversation with Radio Nottingham to be released next Monday.
Today, however, there is a new interview with Richard in Metro. Much of the article talks about bringing Uncle Vanya back to be filmed. However, in the last paragraph Richard discloses some intriguing news about what he has been up to during the lockdown. Apart from audio book recording, he apparently has been writing a “crime thriller novel”!!!! (The article has been archived in our Interviews section.)
19 October 2020
The Times had a short but interesting interview-ish piece with Richard in last Saturday’s magazine edition (behind paywall). Richard gives some insights into why actors are well-prepared for lockdown, his reluctance to be invited to chat shows, and the first thing he does when he comes home from a journey. Thanks to Armidreamer for the shot of the article below. (Also archived in the Interviews section HERE.)
There’s also a short mention of Richard in the BBC’s review of the Uncle Vanya film, noting that Richard and co-star Rosalind Eleazar “create a desperately sad, sensual atmosphere, which both actors play with notable deftness.”
In other news, Julie Delpy made some very complimentary comments on Richard’s work in My Zoe in a recent conversation with The Mirror:
10 October 2020
Yet another Uncle Vanya trailer has dropped via the Uncle Vanya Cinema page on Facebook, promoting the October 27 showing of the filmed performance in cinemas across Europe. More scenes from the play in the clip below.
08 October 2020
And another interview with Richard has just been published. Richard talks to The Guardian on the occasion of Uncle Vanya’s transfer to cinema and also addresses the difficulties currently faced by the arts sector (in the UK) due to the global pandemic. The interview has also been added to the Interview section.
07 October 2020
Catching up with an interview that was already published on 22 September. Metro UK spoke to Richard about everything from reading and audiobooks, to lockdown and the future of theatre. Intriguingly, Richard also hinted that his greatest ambition is to write something before he dies. The interview has also been added to the Press > Interviews section.
06 October 2020
We now have a trailer for Uncle Vanya.
My Zoe released digitally yesterday, so we may see a few more reviews in the coming days. This one from Culturefly is particularly welcome: “[Armitage] is no stranger to villainous roles, but the extent of James’ cruelty, and his terrifying instability, is quite breath-taking. Armitage is mesmerising (…).” Find the review also in the newly established section for My Zoe reviews in the Press menu.
05 October 2020
Some long overdue maintenance is currently taking place on RAnet. Today two new reviews/articles sections were added to the Reviews section in the Press menu. You can now find reviews and articles pertaining to My Zoe and The Stranger under their own headings. Click on the links above or go to the drop down menus in the Press section in the main menu. – I have also begun to add new galleries for Richard’s recent projects. A new gallery with images from Uncle Vanya can be found in the Gallery from the main menu, within the Theatre subcategory. The Film section of the gallery has been updated with stills from My Zoe, too.
The plan is to add more images from other missing projects (Ocean’s 8, Brain on Fire, The Lodge…), too. Your help is appreciated in case you have images from those projects categorised and easily accessible – that makes it easier for me to upload them in the backend media library and then make them visible on the RAnet site (as I will otherwise have to search and download them from the internet myself). You can e-mail them to me at [email protected] or even just tweet them at me @RAnetTweets.
Thank you for your ongoing support!
03 October 2020
In advance of the October 5 digital release of My Zoe in the UK, a couple of new reviews from the Financial Times and The Guardian have come in. These are basically only listed here for completeness’ sake – the reviewers, especially from The Guardian, were not that impressed, unfortunately. For your convenience, the reviews can be read via screenshot below (linked to source via image).
The reviews have also been added to our new reviews section for My Zoe, found under the Press > Reviews & Articles section. I’m hoping to update the Press section for Richard’s recent projects (Uncle Vanya, The Stranger), too.

Richard sends a long video message to Ken Follett on the latter’s publication of his latest novel. You can see the video on Follett’s FB page or below. From what Richard is saying, it almost sounds as if he is trying to (or already has) option one of Follett’s books to turn into a film.

Good news for all fans whose theatre visits for Uncle Vanya were cut short by the pandemic and those who were lucky to see it but wouldn’t mind watching it again: It has just been announced that the play was recorded last month and that it will be shown in cinemas and on the BBC. Transmission and release dates have not been confirmed yet, according to The Stage. But now we know why Richard did not cut his hair during the pandemic 😉
Also, finally some news on Julie Delpy’s My Zoe. After the rights for the UK had been bought, it now looks as if the film will be released this fall. A trailer for the UK is also available.

News from Korea. The Korean sci-fi movie Spacesweepers is ramping up its promo. Today Richard took part in a press briefing via stream – and received some very nice compliments from director Cho Seong-hee. You can see more on the Korean website ext movie (Google translation available) HERE.
In the previous few days there were also announcements that Richard will be involved in another audio book for Audible. Reality and other stories is a collection of short stories by John Lanchester. It is due to be released on 1 October 2020. However, there are country restrictions and so far it appears to be only available for preorder in the UK and US.
According to Deadline Julie Delpy’s My Zoe has finally got a UK distributor. Picked up by Protagonist Pictures, the movie is slated for an October 2020 release.

Audible UK’s promotion of Richard continues. The site has put together a compilation video of “iconic moments” and released it today.
26 June 2020
Good news for all Dr Who fans: Richard is going to be inducted in the Dr Who universe, by way of voicing Rassilon – the “father of time-lording” in an audio spin-off of the well-loved TV show. “I grew up with Doctor Who. The Daleks and the Cybermen were definitely my ‘hiding behind the sofa’ baddies. But I loved being frightened. Tom Baker was my Doctor Who. He had that voice. In a way, what I have tried to do with Rassilon is a little bit Tom Baker-esque”, said Richard in this Radio Times article. He sure has the look down to a tee already:
23 June 2020
And another lead role announced for Richard: According to the Hollywood Reporter, Richard is going to star in the LGTBQ+ drama “Now & Then”. The film is based on a novel and deals with a gay man coming to terms with his past and his relationship with his mother. Says Richard, “this is a beautiful script. The character of Chris resonated with me powerfully. I look forward to inhabiting the role and bringing this script to life.” No news yet on when the filming is going to take place and the finished product can be expected.
22 June 2020
A freshhhhhhh new ad voice over by Richard has appeared. Actually, there are four in total, all for the same UK supermarket chain. Here is the longest of the lot, with lots of lovely Armitage enunciation:
Also, it seems that The Man from Rome is still on. Hollywood Reporter reports that the film will start shooting next February in Spain.

A magazine portrait of Richard appears in this week’s issue of German women’s magazine Brigitte, fellow fan Ellen has discovered. Here’s a shot of the article.

Richard is cool. That’s according to The Leicester Mercury. Richard leads their list of “coolest people Leicestershire is proud to claim”. (He is in great company as other notables include David and Richard Attenborough…)
21 May 2020
What a twofer! The Radio Times publishes an article about Richard reading the Chekhov short stories for audio. And not only that, the article also contains a video message recorded by Richard, straight from his wardrobe home studio. He gives us a little tour of his recording set-up and talks about the Chekhov stories. The article has been screenshot and can be found here in our Interviews section.
18 May 2020
After the unfortunate news that the announced Poirot audio books will only be available in the US (due to copyright restrictions in other territories), Richard had already hinted at “a special something” via Twitter. That may be the collection of Chekhov short stories that have popped up as pre-orders on Audible today. The audio book is due to be released on June 11, 2020.
The photo of Richard on the cover appears to be of the long awaited new images from the photo session with Andy Gotts.
15 May 2020
Photographer Andy Gotts has posted a collage of photos from his shoot with Richard on his IG. Apparently a little practice for loosening up in front of the camera, the images are not quite the usual fare. Gotts’ little text to accompany the post contains some nice compliments about Richard as a collaborator.
9 May 2020
Audible uploaded a short trailer of Richard announcing another couple of audio books that he has recorded during lockdown. Both The Murder on the Links and The Mysterious Affair at Styles are Agatha Christie murder mysteries and set for release on October 6, 2020. Here is Richard straight from his wardrobe:

Also: Apparently The Seville Communion is still on. Fellow fan Mooseturds has found the project listed at the very top of his film acting list on Richard’s page at United Agents. Hopefully filming can start once the current crisis is over.
4 May 2020
Another forthcoming audio book performed by Richard, is Natalie Jenner’s The Jane Austen Society, due to be released on 28 May 2020 also. Publisher Libro.fm has posted an extract of the book on YT.
Also, The Birmingham Repertory Theatre posted an old picture today of Richard in one of his first post-drama school roles. He played Bernardo in Hamlet in 1998.
Finally, we got to see Richard again – straight from his lockdown, Astrov mane still intact! Here he is in a little clip for the Roundabout Theatre New York, reminiscing about his time acting in Love Love Love in 2016.
1 May 2020

Hoping everybody is safe and sound, wherever you are!

A note on our own behalf: We are not advocating you go for retail therapy at this time, but should you be inclined to shop on Amazon now or in the future, please consider accessing the site through our affiliate links. Ali and Sonja have now switched over the accounts, and future commissions earned through the links will go towards the cost of maintaining RAnet (hosting fees etc.) and *of course* will continue to be donated to Richard’s charities on JustGiving.
The links are located on RAnet’s landing page, below the picture of Guy of Gisborne. Affiliate links exist for three Amazon stores – Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.com and Amazon.de.
Shopping via those links does not incur any costs for you! It will however create a commission for RAnet between 1 and 10% of your purchase price. In the past, Ali was able to donate between 500 and 1,000 GBP per year thanks to the commissions earned. Sonja will continue to post the affiliate accounts here in this section.
For your convenience, you can also create a bookmark or pin a tab for the individual Amazon store links. To do so, simply access Amazon via one of RAnet’s buttons. Once you have landed on the Amazon store and the address appears in your browser, make sure you see the tag “wwwrichardarm” in the URL. That is our affiliate ID. Then In Chrome: either click on “Tab” in the top menu – which will pin the tab to your browser; or click “Bookmarks” in the top menu – which will add the site into your bookmarks below the address box. In Safari: To pin the tab, drag the Amazon URL from your address box to the left until only the favicon (the small logo you see in the tab) is visible; or add a bookmark by clicking on “Bookmarks” in the top menu or by using the keyboard short-cut “command + D”.

There was also a new interview with the cast of The Stranger by Next Rush Magazine, with Richard commenting on his ball game abilities. “I’m rubbish at football and only managed to save three goals out of hundreds. I begged Daniel O’Hara to make me look better than I am, or I’d face public shame again – I had to play rugby in Ultimate Force and was equally rubbish!” You can also find it in our Interviews section here.

BT has published a fun interview of 7 Questions with Richard Armitage. The questions refer to what he liked about the story and the character of Adam Price in The Stranger.
6th February 2020
Here’s a wonderfully light-hearted interview for Netflix UK & Ireland with Richard and Jennifer Saunders.
Interesting: Apparently Richard did not have to audition for the role of Adam Price but was offered it straight away, according to this Buzzfeed article.
“Armitage gives an incredibly grounded central performance as Price and you fully believe and invest with his character right from the start. He has a strong on screen presence which lends considerable weight to his scenes. At the same time, he is able to be very unassuming when required, being quite believable as an average dad leading a normal life. Armitage shows his versatility in the role and it makes for a gripping watch.” – Great praise for Richard in this review of The Stranger on Cultured Vultures.
5th February 2020
For those of you who are interested in filming location, here is an online article in The Tab about the locations used for The Stranger. The Price family home is a £1.45m mansion in a leafy suburb of Manchester.
On the 4th of February, Richard appeared on the BBC’s “Afternoon Live”. Anchor Simon McCoy published the interview in its entirety via Twitter.

The Stranger has received a lot of positive feedback since release, trending on Twitter and making the top spot on the Netflix show ranking.
31st January 2020
In the wake of the release of all eight episodes of The Stranger on Netflix, these are some of the reviews of the show which also make a point of mentioning Richard. (There are plenty more reviews out.) “As Adam, Armitage provides the closest thing we get to a still centre in the shifting plot”, says The Guardian, advises not to make any evening plans, but gives (only) a 3-star rating. The Independent finds “Armitage and Dervla Kirwan are convincing as the professionals harbouring dark secrets” and awards 3 stars. “Armitage, best known to American audiences for his role as Thorin Oakenshield in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit trilogy, gives a solid performance as the driven but somewhat dull Adam”, says CBR.com. Den of Geek calls Richard “a strong lead”, one of the “highlights in the cast” and recommends the show. Salon commends Richard for playing Adam with “more sorrow than anger”. 1. Deadline have reported that Richard has been cast in Julie Delpy’s new film My Zoe, also featuring Daniel Brühl, Lior Ashkenazy, Gemma Arterton and child actor Sophia Ally. The film has been written by Julie Delpy and she will also direct and star in the film. Richard will play James, the ex-husband of Delpy’s character Isabelle. Variety have reported that filming will begin this spring in the UK, so presumably Richard will film his scenes for this film before filming starts on Berlin Station series 2.
2. Thanks to Guylty for passing along this German article about Berlin Station and an English translation. The article refers to a panel discussion from last weekend at the Berlinale film festival. Richard is mentioned first in the cast list and the article gives some insight in the production team’s work and creative decisions.
3. Pilgrimage has been acquired by RLJ Entertainment for distribution in US movie theaters – let’s hope an international release will be forthcoming! This news via The Hollywood Reporter.
4. The name of Richard’s character in Ocean’s Eight has been revealed – he will play Claude Becker (source: IMDB), although it is not yet clear if this is a cameo or a more substantial role.
Pictures of Richard filming with James Corden have been published on Just Jared and here is a video showing James Corden with a suitcase malfunction! (Thanks to jico_s on Instagram).
5. IndieWire have reported that Brain on Fire has been bought by Netflix, indeed you can now add the film to your queue (this might be US residents only at the moment). Sadly the film will not get a theatrical release according to the article.
“Brain on Fire,” starring Chloe Grace Moretz, debuted at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival to mostly withering reviews and then sold straight to streaming platform Netflix, with no theatrical release.
Keep your fingers crossed for a DVD release!
6. Two videos have been released by Audible to promote the audiobook Romeo and Juliet: A Novel. A 24 minute discussion between Richard and the author David Hewson is here on YouTube, which is a very interesting discussion on the writing and recording process. And there is also an interview with Richard about the audiobook, on the Audible site (with a large picture of Richard which you can click to enlarge and save below – hello new desktop background) and also on YouTube.
7. Richard’s narration of David Copperfield has been nominated for a 2017 Audie Award for Literary Fiction & Classics. The winners will be announced at the Audies Gala on 1st June at the French Institute Alliance Francaise in New York.

A trailer for Brain on Fire has arrived! Watch it here. Richard plays Tom Cahalan, the father of Susannah Cahalan who wrote the best-selling book “Brain on Fire: My Month of Madness”. Filming took place from July to August 2015 and although the film was shown at the Toronto Film Festival in September last year there is still no information concerning worldwide release dates.
Richard has announced his next project on Twitter with a link to his Instagram account. Here is a link to the Vimeo short film which inspired the film. An announcement about the film Miles, written and directed by Oliver Daly, appeared in Variety on 28 April last year and includes the following synopsis:
“Miles” centers on an 18-year-old searching for a way out of his small California town. He stumbles upon M.A.X., an escaped prototype of an advanced robot, and finds himself in an unlikely friendship. He soon becomes the target of a massive manhunt that puts him and everyone he cares about in danger.
According to IMDB the release date is set for 12 November 2017.
Update: Richard has now deleted all posts relating to this project from his social media, so his involvement is now in doubt.
Here is an interview with Richard in the Israeli magazine, Pnay Plus, published 15th December, in which he discusses working on The Hobbit, Hannibal and Berlin Station and not wanting to attend fan conventions. At the end of the interview Richard states that he is looking to move back home to England. Thank you to Sonya (@soneekk1 on twitter) for scanning the article and providing the translation. The title of the article is “Richard the First”. Click the thumbnails to enlarge. English translation here.

1. A reminder that the birthday page will close for new comments at 9pm on Sunday (UK time). This will be the last birthday page on this site. Now that Richard is active on social media via Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, I feel that you will be more inclined to want to leave him a message directly via those sites – plus I expect he is more likely to read them there! So a heartfelt thank you to those who have left birthday messages to Richard on this website over the past 8 years, I have really enjoyed reading them. I’m grateful that you chose this site to leave your birthday wishes, but now it’s time to move to social media and call it a day. Thank you! Ali xx

Here is the page with a summary of Richard’s projects in the past 12 months with a link to the charities Richard has nominated on JustGiving. The page will close for comments at 9pm UK time on Sunday 21st August. Thank you!

- The Hollywood Reporter ran a story following writer and exec producer Olen Steinhauer’s comments that Berlin Station is a more accurate portrayal of the intelligence community than shown in Homeland, whose most recent season was also set in Berlin. Richard’s follow up tweet on this is very amusing. Click the image below to enlarge (in case the tweet disappears).
- Deadline have also quoted Olen Steinhauer on the comparisons between Homeland and Berlin Station with more details about the importance the city plays in this series.
1. The first scene from Berlin Station is now available on YouTube, which means it no longer has the Entertainment Weekly logo in the corner. So, I have recreated the screencaps and they are much better quality too. Click here for the gallery.

Richard has tweeted that he is no longer involved in his current project due to lack of time before his next commitment. We can assume the project he is no longer working on is Midlife Crisis, a British film that Toby Stephens has unfortunately also had to leave due to delays in production (Toby Stephen’s tweets here and here). We know Richard has been in London recently and a couple of days ago he unfollowed the film’s twitter account.
Here are Richard’s tweets on this subject:
Update: Richard is no longer working on this project. 1. There is no official confirmation yet, but it is clear from various tweets and twitter pages that Richard is has just started filming in London, working on a film called Midlife Crisis. Fellow cast mates include Toby Stephens, Colin Salmon and John Thomson, so I think we can assume this is going to be very entertaining and probably quite funny. Richard tweeted a selfie on his way to work the other day but it was soon deleted – you can find the selfie if you search the internet with little difficulty. The offical twitter page for the film is here – check out their ‘follows’. Incidentally, Richard and Toby last worked together on Robin Hood series 3, released in 2009.

The first trailer for Berlin Station is here on YouTube, released by the Epix channel. This 10 part series will be released this autumn.
Richard’s character in Alice Through the Looking Glass is King Oleron, according to his IMDB page. Richard said this was a cameo role at the end of this video interview with Digital Spy, however in this radio interview with Irish radio programme ‘Newstalk’, recorded just after The Crucible finished its run in September 2014, he said he had a small part in the film (8m 36s).
Here is a picture of Richard in his cameo role in the forthcoming film Alice Through the Looking Glass, released in the UK and US in a few weeks time on 27 May. The picture was taken from a featurette about the costumes in the film. Watch the full video here on Vimeo.

The first official pictures from Berlin Station have been released, via the German news outlet Berliner Zeitung, two of which show Richard as Daniel Miller. Many press outlets are still referring to his character as Daniel Meyer, as this was the name given on the original PR release, however Richard and the writer have since confirmed on twitter that the character is called Daniel Miller.
Here are the two new photos – click to enlarge. I will create a Berlin Station gallery on this site when more pictures are released.
The article refers to the German actress Victoria Mayer and her role as Ingrid Hollander in the US drama, and so there is no information about Richard or his role, except a small reference to her character’s interaction with Mr Miller: ‘For me it is more about Ingrid’s conflict with the agent, who is played by Richard Armitage, and her confrontation with the American secret service’. Here is a rough English translation of the article.

2. Emmy spotlight: Cower before Richard Armitage (‘Hannibal’), the great Red Dragon: this article makes a compelling case that Richard Armitage should be included in the Emmy nominations for his role as Francis Dolarhyde in NBC’s Hannibal, and who are we to argue? Click the link to read the article, which includes the following:
“…like his co-stars, Armitage gives a performance all his own. It’s a carefully balanced turn: Dolarhyde has a split personality, one half an insecure wallflower and the other half a monster out of nightmares. But Armitage makes us believe that both personas could exist in one man — more than that, that each persona fuels the other.”
3. Hariclea attended the Crucible screening at the Barbican Cinema in London on Wednesday 9th March, which also included a Q&A with cast members Zara White (Mercy Lewis), Anna Madley (Elizabeth Proctor) and Marama Corlett (Betty Parris), as well as Digital Theatre’s Robert Delamere, who directed the performance. Click here to read her blog of the evening, an account which I feel is well worth a read for insights into the production and a trip down memory lane for those of us who were lucky enough to attend the mesmerising performance of all involved in this intense version of Arthur Miller’s classic. It was also interesting to hear that Robert Delamere met the playwright many years ago. Thank you for sharing Hariclea!
