This episode, broadcast in March 2005, was the first episode in series 4 of the long-running drama.
Episode Synopsis
Sergeant Havers has returned to work after being shot at the end of the previous series. Together with Inspector Lynley, she travels to a small Suffolk village in East Anglia to investigate the murder of an interior designer, Samantha Walthew, who was shot inside her house. However, it's soon apparent that her body was deliberately moved outside. Inspector Lynley is furious to discover that the crime scene has been tampered with, due to the local policeman leaving his footprints around the body.
As the police interview the locals they learn that the dead woman grew up in the area and was now having an affair with a former childhood friend and one time owner of the manor house, Philip Turner. They discover that the dead woman's sister was raped by a local man whose son and wife still live in the area. The sister committed suicide fifteen years earlier and the perpetrator mysteriously disappeared. These events are somehow connected to the current crime but the perpetrator's son refuses to co-operate with the investigation and attempts suicide to avoid doing so.
As the pair close in on the murderer, Havers, becomes trapped in the local pub with several villages and the murderer. During the siege the villagers' secret is revealed and the reason for the current murder becomes clear. Havers is forced to relive the horror of her recent shooting in order to prevail.
