Rumours that Richard Armitage had landed a role in the Captain America movie were confirmed in September 2010 when pictures and video of him on the film set in Manchester began to surface (see below). It was soon apparent that his role was that of Heinz Kruger, a Nazi agent and the first enemy of Steve Rogers aka Captain America. On 10 October, Richard's name appeared on the Captain America IMDB page.
Captain America: The First Avenger was released in the US on 22 July 2011 and in the UK on 29 July 2011. See news dated 19 November below for the international release schedule. It was also shown in 3D.
Report received via email to this site from an actor who played a docker during Richard's scenes in Liverpool, 2nd October 2010:
"I can confirm that I am a professional actor, and I was hired to play a docker and spent a week at Stanley dock in Liverpool. I am a big Spooks fan and had no idea that Richard was in it as he was cast late. We were about to do a scene and there was a tall guy in a grey suit. Someone said to me "That's the guy from Spooks". I assumed it would be someone who'd been in the show once, or a lesser character. Then I recognised Richard. I couldn't believe it! I had to be in a 1940s car as he shot towards me (and Captain America), then I was a yard from him as he was hauled from a mini sub and thrown (his stuntman) onto the dockside. Richard then had to lie down in a soaked suit (and it was VERY cold) and take a cyanide pill. I was sat near him when he was practising chewing it - it was obviously not very appetising! There was also a dummy made of him - from the waist up, that was scarily life-like! He seemed very quiet and unassuming, but friendly with the crew. Wish he wasn't playing a Nazi though!
I still can't believe I was in the same scene as Richard!! I really wanted to say to him how much I loved his work on Spooks and Robin Hood, but it would have been a bit unprofessional on set. I do remember him practising with the poison capsule at a table a few feet from me. He seemed to find the taste pretty horrible! He seemed very humble and good natured on set, and a very nice man."

Captain America DVD Extras: details of the extras are at the bottom of this detailed review of the movie on TheHDRoom.com. Richard appears briefly (about 10 - 15 seconds) in the third featurette about the technology used in the film, showing him filming scenes in the submarine. He is also praised in the audio commentary.

Captain America DVD release dates: in the US it is released by Amazon.com on 25 October 2011 at a cost of $17.99 ($24.99 for Blu-ray). Amazon UK haven't confirmed the price yet, but the release date is currently 5 December 2011.

Richard was in New York last night at another screening of Captain America: The First Avenger at the AMC Lowes Lincoln Square theatre, with Hayley Atwell and Neal McDonough. The event was promoted by Visa Signature. Pictures are here in the NYC Screening gallery.

Richard attended last night's premiere of the movie at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood, CA and two video interviews have been made available on the Marvel.com site (Richard appears at 2.46) and on the AP Live site (click the first clip under 'Previous clips', Richard's interview appears at 3.52).

Short trailers for Captain America have been shown on US television over the last few days, showing similar clips to the main trailer. The third TV spot however shows a very brief shot of Richard as Heinz Kruger being kicked by Steve Rogers (25 seconds in), which was filmed at the Albert Dock in Liverpool. Richard also appears two more times earlier on in the trailer, but these are clips already seen in the main trailer.

The Entertainment Tonight programme on 22 March did not show any more images of Richard than those posted in yesterday's news below, however there is extra footage from the film and an extra scene on the MovieWeb site. The full trailer has still not been released.

Entertainment Tonight announced that they'd be showing footage from the film on their programme on 22 March, according to various news sites and The HD Room. There is a very brief glimpse of Richard as Heinz Kruger in the youtube clip embedded on that site, although thanks to Luna we can see a much better quality version on youtube here:
ComicBookMovie.com have published a detailed description of the full trailer, still not released, in which Richard appears with some brief dialogue between him and Steve Rogers.

Captain America production designer Rick Heinrichs has revealed some of the plot of the film in a French magazine and The Daily Blam have summarised the plot points. No mention of Heinz Kruger/Richard Armitage but a general overview of the storyline. A trailer for this film is expected in the next few weeks.

Joe Johnston, director of Captain America: The First Avenger, has commented on the recent publicity photos from the film. Of the photo of Richard in the submarine, he says 'The submarine was built by Paul Corbould's team of special effects technicians. It can actually dive and resurface, travels at 12 knots, has a watertight compartment for the actor, Richard Armitage, who plays a very convincingly evil spy, Heinz Kruger.'

Pictures from the Captain America movie have been released by Entertainment Weekly (larger pictures on the Daily Mail site 2nd November). One of the pictures shows Richard as Heinz Kruger in a HYDRA submarine - yes that really is him apparently! Another article on the EW site gives more information about the film.
